The Mercury Theatre was an acclaimed New York drama company founded by John Houseman and a young man by the name of Orson Welles.
In the summer of 1938 CBS radio offered the company an hour long slot in which they broadcast dramatizations of classic books, in the series The Mercury Theatre on the Air.
Amongst these was the notorious The War of the Worlds broadcast that caused a mass panic on October 30th 1938. The twelfth of The Mercury Theatre on the Air broadcasts was The Immortal Sherlock Holmes, which was based upon a play by William Gillette.
