Leaked document points to $299 “Xbox 720” for 2013
Following Microsoft’s presentation at E3 there was some disappointment that there was no announcement for a replacement to the Xbox 360 console, I personally felt that there was a lot of life left in the 7 year old console.
However a leaked document (assuming that it is authentic) indicates that Microsoft has plans for a replacement to hit the stores in the holiday season of 2013.
The improved hardware will allow for “true 1080p and full 3D” output, along with flexible resizing and compositing, according to the document. The new hardware will also allow for low-powered “always on” mode, which will enable features such as a “whole home DVR” that can record shows in the background and then stream them to other devices. For game storage, the “Xbox 720” will reportedly include a Blu-ray disc drive as well as both internal Flash storage and a hard disk drive, the document says. For internet connectivity, both WiMax and HSDPA (3G) coverage are included.
In addition it will come bundled with an improved version of their Kinect system and then additional features are to be rolled out over the following few years with a move towards cloud gaming in around 2015.

60 Days to MCSE
I discovered the 60 Days to MCSE challenge a little too late to participate along with those who had planned to achieve their goal of passing all the necessary exams for the MCSE: Private Cloud certification.
As the beta exams for and were available during TechEd 2012 which finished just a couple of days ago there are I hope many success stories to be heard in the forum over the next few days.
I’m taking up the challenge but as I already have my MCSA: Windows Server 2008 and MCTS: Windows Server 2008 R2, Server Virtualization certifications I only need to pass the Exam 70-246: Monitoring and Operating a Private Cloud with System Center 2012 in order to become a MCSE: Private Cloud.
I don’t think that it is too much of a challenge to study for and pass this exam by the middle of August especially with the excellent resources available already from Microsoft.

So in searching for a little more information on the new Kindle that Amazon have launched in the UK I stumbled across the fact that in the US they have launched two new additional model, a touchscreen version and the Kindle Fire. The Kindle Fire is a colour touchscreen dual-core tablet with a 7″ screen and 8GB of storage, all for $199. One of the key features of the Kindle Fire is the Amazon Silk web browser that will dramatically improve the web browsing experience for the user by utilizing the Amazon Web Services cloud to act as a form of proxy server and carry out much of the computational load of displaying a webpage which might contain elements from many different servers thus requiring many requests to many different IPs. In addition through analysis of web requests flowing through the Amazon Web Services cloud they can predict the most likely next page a user might browse to and preload that page in the background as the user views the original page again decreasing the time waiting for a page to load.

What most tablet manufacturers have failed to realise is that the iPad is a success not solely because of its form but because of its ecosystem also. Android tablets generally are too variable to be considered a coherent set of hardware sharing the same ecosystem.
But I believe that Amazon will succeed with the Fire because they are not going after the niche currently occupied by Apple instead they have created a device whose purpose is to help sell more products through Amazon. Despite productivity tools such as word processors, spreadsheet apps and photo editing apps being available on iPad tablets are essentially devices for consuming content not they are pretty lousy for producing content. Amazon have realised this and produced the optimal content consumption device and ecosystem.

I’m a big fan of the Halo series, I can’t believe it has been 10 years since I first put on the mantle of Master Chief. The new visuals look fantastic as you might expect and this will give me a chance to Co-op it on Legendary with my soon-to-be wife Amy.
The first Halo plays very differently than the modern games, and that feel is kept in the Anniversary edition of the game. The magnum is a very powerful gun in the original release, and it was pointed out how good it’s going to feel to go back to that weapon to wipe out hordes of enemies. The backstory of Halo will be explored in a new way with the terminals, and the ability to play with the original graphics is another way of giving respect to the original release.
